The Stir Writers Get Sexy Hair Makeovers: See the Before & After! (PHOTOS)

Stefanie's 'Before' photoWhen it comes to your day-to-day hair routine, a lot of us get stuck in a rut. We find a style that's relatively easy and stick with it because, hey, it works and, generally, doesn't take a lot of time. Which is exactly why it can be hard to break the mold, especially when you're a busy Stirstaffer.
A few of the girls here had the opportunity to try something new with the help of Flavio from Mode A Salon. With a few simple waves of a hair dryer, some careful precision, and spritzes here and there, the ladies were feeling more glam then ever.
The best part? We learned ALL about how to get salon-style results like these right at home. Check out these fantastic Stir staffer makeovers and read all aboutcreating your own salon-ready look, here:
First off, let's take a look at our beautiful team. Kicking things off, our editorial marketing manager Stefanie. You saw her before above, now here's her after:

So now the big question: How can you and I do this kind of glam treatment at home? According to Flavio, it's simple, and the secret to a great blow-out is building a foundation and using the right tools and brushes. The tools in his arsenal: A paddle brush to comb your hair, a round mid-size brush to bounce and curl the hair while using a hair dryer, and Velcro rollers.
Now, the how-to. Start in the front, take a small amount hair at a time, and start drying. When you’re done, use Velcro rollers to secure hair in place. Move along to the sides, blow dry and secure hair with rollers as you did in the first section. Finally end with the back of the head, repeating the steps from the previous sections. The more time you allow the hair to sit in the curlers, the better your chances are of holding the hairstyle from day to night.
Once you're all done, spray a light hairspray all over and let dry for few seconds before taking the Velcro rollers out. With that, you're done and ready to take on the day with salon-style results!
New Salon in Eastchester/Bronxville
Flavio Oliviera has twenty-five years of experience in the hair design field. His year-old salon, Mode A Salon, in the Chester Heights section of Eastchester is a destination for city-dwellers and Westchester residents alike. Appointments can be made through the internet so that if one is coming back from vacation or a business trip, Flavio and his one assistant will make sure that an appointment is made and they will even open the salon on Sundays or visit clients' homes, when necessary.
Mode A Salon carries L'Oreal products, including Fiberceutic Conditioner, and the INOA line of ammonia-free products. Additionally, the salon will begin carrying the Davines line of eco-friendly products this year.
Mode A Salon differs from other salons in the Westchester area since its owner prides himself on creating a personal relationship with each client and providing a sophisticated and elegant experience. This lounge/salon is perfect for those who are looking for a luxurious experience that is also good value.
Women who have long hair and decide to go short definitely should go about it in a process, unless they’re so sure about the decision.
“It's not easy for some women [to] manage short hair,” says Flavio Olivera, owner of Mode A Salon in Bronxville, New York, “you can't just wash and go. You must have to style your hair and the most important thing: Personality.”
A woman must feel comfortable with her hair short.
When women go to a hair salon and want a short haircut, it's because they know what they want. However, Flavio never suggests going from long to short so drastically. If you’re tired with the same hairstyle and want a change, Flavio will cut a medium length first, to figure out if you’re truly ready for a shorter style.
He explains all the benefits of having shorter hair such as less time to style, a fresher and younger appearance and other women who’ve had shorter hair in the past or present that look fabulous such as Halle Berry, Madonna in the 80’s, Audrey Tautou, Victoria Beckham, Katie Holmes and others.
Flavio talks of beautiful women when styling short hair to help his clients relate to celebrities on a more personal level.

From Flavio Oliveira and Mode A Salon
Flavio Oliveira, owner and master stylist of Mode A Salon in Bronxville, New York suggests flawless styles for women of all ages. Age is but a number and hair is a woman’s best accessory – Flavio helps you look your best and feel most youthful with simple hairstyles designed to take you through the decades!
20's
The twenty-something female has so many opportunities to explore her independence through fashion, beauty, lifestyle and career. The way a woman in her twenties expresses herself is creatively, whether she has long, medium or short hair. For this on-the-go age group, the transition from day to evening can be as simple as styling a short do’ with a few bobby pins, styling a medium do’ with a low chignon or a half up/down do’ and with long hair, play around with a modified bun, braids, a messy ponytail and so many more.
With the doors of life wide open, women in their twenties love to express themselves and the most noticeable way is through her hair. She can wear it down for daytime classes and style it in a few minutes for a fun evening look that doesn’t have to take hours of styling.
30's
As women approach their thirties, they want to convey a more polished and elegant look. Oftentimes, they become more exigent with their appearance. A mid length haircut can revive self-confidence by re-introducing personal style.
Women with a mid length haircut can still play around with different textures from sleek and straight during the day to wavy or curly for evening styles. Clip on extensions can be used to add length and drama. A half up/down do’ is a lovely casual look for medium length hair.
For women in their thirties who have longer hair, Flavio suggests to make a quick braid. Twist only half the braid into a bun and let the rest fall beautifully down the back.
These styles are quick and require minimal effort, perfect for the busy thirty-something.
40's
As a woman approaches and gets into her forties, gray hair does too (sometimes, perhaps even before). These steps outline the proper techniques to guarantee flawless hairstyle from day to evening, keeping up confidence and a youthful appearance.
Start with a mid length haircut with shorter layers and a vibrant hair gloss. This boosts volume and creates a formal look. To ensure results, it’s important to develop confidence in a hair stylist.
For voluminous at-home styling, after blow drying, use the dryer all over, making adjustments and use hair spray on the roots for all-day volume.
For a more casual look, Flavio suggests a foundation moisturizing product such as Smooth Velours by L’Oreal. Using Velcro rollers, blow dry hair. Remove rollers and brush hair smooth. Finish with light pomade for an elegant, sophisticated look.
50's
Just because a woman turns fifty, doesn’t mean she should cut her hair short. Women in their fifties are beautiful, sexy and more stylish than ever. To enforce confidence, the ultimate hairstyle is mid length cut with some layers or bangs.
For a refined style add a radiant gloss over the natural hair color with a few highlights around the face for luminosity. A straight blow dry during the day easily transitions to evening by adding soft curls.
New Shorter Hairstyles to Consider for Your Next Cut

Fall’s Newest Hair Styles and How To Wear Them
Fall’s Newest Hair Styles and How To Wear Them
Flavio Oliveira has created an oasis of peace and tranquility at Mode A Salon right on New Rochelle Road in Bronxville. Brightly hued autumn flowers enhance the serene retreat, a splash of color and excitement that hints of Flavio’s roots in Brazil.
Serenity and a pop of color are all inspiration for Flavio, a star with scissors, who worked as an expert stylist and colorist at one of NYC’s most famous salons (Warren Tricomi), ... and who has now started his own salon in the town he calls home.
Because of his background, in Brazil and in Manhattan, Flavio attends all the latest trend workshops and he sees two interesting styles for fall:
Braids and Ponytails
Flavio tells why braids and ponytails are THE look for this coming season:
“A polished style combine with a modern useful ponytail or side braid is a good alternative if you’re looking for an easy way to impress for the new season.
“A good ponytail can be sleek, wild, long or short, straight or curled--it all depends on your persona, and all look fantastic.
“Ponytails or braids in my opinion are like a Chanel suit. You will never be wrong with it. I think is the perfect look for day or night.”
Don't have long hair? Ponytails and braids are easy to find… Flavio even has a full selection of colors and lengths at the salon.
They’re not extensions…. They’re easy to attach. They can add a touch of a different color, can be ombre’d, and can give you a swingy, easy style that can go so well with the leather looks in fashion that are hot this season.
Think Madonna the cheerleader… start with a good, precise haircut. And then work some magic with your ponytail or your braids.
